CATEGORIES
Jazz - A style of dance that partners music and body that reflects a compilation of universal cultures and styles in an effort to strengthen the body, mind and soul as an individual within a communal energy. It combines syncopated rhythms with technical movements that stem from classical ballet.
Lyrical - A melding of ballet, jazz and modern with emphasis on using the lyrics and emotions of the music to influence the choreography and performance.
Modern - A very grounded style of dance whose roots began as a complete contrast to ballet. Movements stem from contractions, swing and release and fall and recovery. Themes and Variations are seen throughout the dance and tend to lead the choreography.
Contemporary - A style of dance that traditionally combines classical modern with classical ballet, but is now allowing jazz, lyrical and hip-hop to influence the choreography.
Hip Hop - A style that refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping.
Kick - A dance performance where the majority of the dance includes varied kick sequences and are performed with an emphasis on precision, timing, control, technique and height uniformity.
Open - Any style of dance that does not fit into the traditional categories. Usually a combination of the above categories or has a more theatrical element.
Pom - A style that has a strong emphasis on intricate arm movements and visually pleasing to the eye due to the different groupings and shapes made by the arm movements. Poms should be utilized for the majority of the routine.
Military - A dance performance consisting of strong, sharp, linear movements focusing on precision, placement, and formation changes.
Prop - A style that incorporates an object that leads the choreography and helps paint a picture for the audience. Props must be used the majority of the time.
Novelty - A dance performance that is popular for being unusual or humorous. Usually has a theme that is carried out throughout the performance by using dance movements appropriate to the character of the dance.
Production - A dance performance that is usually themed that utilizes a combination of dance elements and styles. Staging, props, and/or backdrops may be utilized. Performance must not exceed regulation time.

AWARDS
TEAMS & OFFICERS
Teams must enter 3 different categories to be eligible for each of the following awards within your classification. If entering 4+ routines, only the top 3 scoring routines will count towards final average score.
- Superior Award - Awarded to Teams and Officers competing in less than 3 routines and scoring 85 or higher
- Sweepstakes Award - Awarded to Teams and Officers receiving an average score of 87 or higher on 3 routines.
- Super Sweepstakes - Awarded to Teams and Officers receiving an average score of 90 or higher on 3 routines.
- Judges Award - Awarded to Teams and Officers receiving an average score of 95 or higher on 3 routines.
- Technical Merit Award - Awarded to Teams and Officers receiving an average technique score of 23 or higher on 3 routines.
- Overall High Point Technique - Awarded to the Team regardless of size, with the highest overall average in technique on the one selected performance. Must have 5 or more teams to award.
- Outstanding Choreography Award - Awarded to the Teams and Officers receiving an average choreography score of 23 or higher for any routine entered.
- High Point Performance Award - Awarded to the ONE Team or Officer performance with the highest total score in Public/Private and Studio/Community.
- Best in Category (Studio) Awards - Awarded to the Studio Team and Officers scoring a 90 or higher in each category.
- Best in Category (Public/Private) Awards - Awarded to the Public/Private Team and Officer Lines in each category. Must score 90 or higher.
- Best in Classification Awards - Awarded to the Team and Officer Lines with the highest average score for 3 routines in each Division and Classification (Public/Private and Studio/Community)
- National Circle of Honor - Awarded to the top Studio/Community Teams & Officers who received the highest average total score for 3 routines (depending on the total number of entries) and to the top Public/Private Teams & Officers who received the highest average total score for 3 routines (depending on the total number of entries)
- Overall Grand Champion - Awarded to the Team & Officers receiving the highest average total score for 3 routines in both the Studio and Public/Private Divisions.

All other teams will wait out of the performance area until their time to rehearse. You will rehearse in order of team size division (small, medium, large, extra large).
We will also be showcasing each top scoring performance from all teams not in the final competition round, along with the top 3 or 4 Dance Officer Lines and solo winner from the 9-10 grade division and 11-12 grade division.

Duets, Trios, & Ensembles
- Time Limit 1.5 - 2.5 minutes.
- 5 minutes including entrance and exit.
- Three Adjudicator scores will be added to determine final scores and awards.
- Duets, Trios & Ensembles receiving a Superior rating of 90 -100 will be awarded a Nationals lapel pin for each performer.
- Public/Private schools and Studio/Community teams will be judged separately.
- Excellent ratings of 75 - 89 will receive a Nationals Ribbon of Excellence for each performer.
- Winner, 1st runner up, and 2nd runner up trophies will be awarded to the top 1, 2 or 3 scores in each division depending on the number of entries.
- BGD cannot be responsible for shipping awards or score packets that have been left at contest. Should this happen, arrangements for pick up must be made with the host school.
Solos
- All Public/Private School and Studio/Community teams will be judged separately.
- Time Limit 1.5 - 2.5 minutes.
- 5 minutes including entrance and exit.
- Three Adjudicators scores will be added to determine final scores and awards.
- Superior ratings of 90 -100 will be awarded a Nationals lapel pin.
- Excellent ratings of 75 - 89 will be awarded a Nationals Ribbon of Excellence.
- Winner, 1st runner-up, 2nd runner-up trophies will be awarded to each age group depending on the number of entries.
- If a dancer enters more than one solo, only the highest score will be counted.
- Only Winners from each division will perform.
- Age divisions will be; Pre-K-K, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12
Team Routines
- Time Limit 1.5 - 3 minutes not including entrance and exit. 5 minutes including entrance and exit. Please notify the office or make note on your Registration form if you exceed the total of 5 minutes so we can allow enough time in our schedule.
- Entries are grouped together according to the following guidelines:
- Public/Private Schools which includes Middle School Teams, JV. Teams and High School Teams
- Studio/Community Teams which include Pre-K-K, Elem. 1-3, Inter. 4-6, Middle School 7-9, High School 9-12
- High School Varsity Teams will be grouped together according to team size.
- Small Team (up to 25), Medium Team (26-39), Large Team (40-55), Extra Lg. Team (56-69), Super Team (70+)
- JV Teams are grouped together regardless of team size, and are not eligible for Overall & Best of The Best Awards.
- Middle School Teams are grouped together regardless of team size.
- A minimum of 6 dancers will be required to be entered as a Team.
- NO Changes will be accepted after 5 days prior to the contest.
- Please take time to review all awards and requirements to be eligible to receive each award.
Dance Officers
- Time Limit 1.5 - 2.5 minutes not including entrance and exit. 5 minutes including entrance and exit.
- Must consist of Dance Officers ONLY.
- High School Varsity Officer entries are grouped according to your teams size.
- Small Team (up to 25), Medium Team (26-39), Large Team (40-55), Extra Lg. Team (56-69), Super Team (70+)
- Each Teams Top 3 scoring performances will be averaged for the overall score for all specialty and overall awards. Please see awards section for descriptions.
- Please take time to review all awards and requirements to be eligible to receive each award.
- Middle School Officers will be grouped together.
Social Officers
- Social Officers are eligible to enter ONLY one performance in any of the categories offered.
- All performances are judged together regardless of style.
- Time Limit 1.5 - 2.5 minutes, 5 minutes including entrance and exit.
- Performance must consist of Social Officers ONLY.
- A social officer line scoring an 85 or higher will be awarded a superior trophy.
- 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards are given depending on number of entries.
