US Copyright laws require that for-profit enterprises, like Battleground Dance, Inc., purchase performance licenses to allow for the public broadcast of copyrighted music at our dance events. Fortunately, non-profit educational institutions are legally exempt from these license requirements provided certain requirements are met:
When creating a mixed performance track using multiple songs, you should protect yourself by:
When registering for a BGD event, you will be required to certify that your music that will be broadcast during your routine does not violate any US copyright laws.
- All music must be legally purchased (iTunes, Google Play, etc.)
- Each performance track can include only one song, with minimal edits to length (e.g. to comply with performance time limits)
- The tempo of the song should not be adjusted in a way that distorts the integrity of the song
When creating a mixed performance track using multiple songs, you should protect yourself by:
- Using non-copyrighted songs only
- Using legally purchased copyrighted songs with at least a 1-second gap between each song
- Using a professionally produced mix from a source that already meets all of the applicable licensing and permission requirements
